Mental Health and Wellbeing Local in Bairnsdale (servicing East Gippsland) represents an important step toward improving access to community-led mental health and wellbeing support. In collaboration with Wellways and their partners Calibre Healthcare Interiors designed a welcoming, inclusive environment that promotes recovery, connection, and wellbeing through natural materials, soft tones, and flexible, people-centred spaces.

The Challenge

Designing the Mental Health and Wellbeing Local in Bairnsdale presented a range of challenges, including the need to create a space that felt both safe and approachable for the East Gippsland community. Central to the process was integrating feedback from people with lived experience, ensuring the interiors would foster emotional safety and practical functionality. Balancing rigorous health and safety requirements with the desire to achieve a calm, restorative atmosphere required careful planning and material selection. Collaboration between Wellways, partners, healthcare professionals, and local community members added valuable insight and authenticity, shaping a space that truly reflects the region it serves.

The Solution

In response, Calibre Healthcare Interiors delivered a design that celebrates connection to place while prioritising comfort, inclusivity, and wellbeing. The interiors feature soft, natural finishes, gentle lighting, and intuitive spatial flow to create a sense of calm and trust. Flexible layouts allow for group programs, quiet reflection, and one-on-one support, while maintaining dignity and privacy for individuals. Every element—from colour palette to furniture and finishes was guided by the goal of creating a space that feels safe, uplifting, and reflective of East Gippsland’s community spirit.

Health & Wellbeing Considerations

Health and wellbeing were integral to every decision within the Mental Health and Wellbeing Local in Bairnsdale. Natural light, acoustic balance, and biophilic design elements contribute to a restorative and grounded atmosphere. Soft colour palettes and tactile materials help reduce stress and promote calm, while clear wayfinding supports ease of movement and accessibility. The result is an environment where clients, staff, and community members feel supported, respected, and empowered on their journey to wellbeing.
