Calibre Interiors, in collaboration with Wellways, has completed a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals in Greater Shepparton, Strathbogie and Moira (GSSM), designed to assist in the recovery and wellbeing of its participants through thoughtfully curated, calming interiors. Developed through a collaborative process involving a diverse group of stakeholders and individuals with lived experience, the facility offers a welcoming and therapeutic environment. Flexible spaces within the design enable the delivery of a wide range of community services, enhancing the accessibility and functionality of the centre.

The Challenge

Creating the Mental Health and Wellbeing Local in GSSM posed several unique challenges. Central to the project was the need to sensitively integrate feedback from individuals with lived experience, ensuring that the final design would be both emotionally supportive and functionally appropriate. Balancing the rigorous safety requirements of a health and wellness environment with the desire to create a warm and supportive atmosphere required innovative thinking. Additionally, coordinating insights from healthcare professionals, support staff, community members, and partner organisations added complexity, but was essential in delivering a truly inclusive and responsive facility.

The Solution

Calibre Interiors embraced a human-centred design approach, rooted in empathy and collaboration. From the outset, the project was shaped by deep engagement with stakeholders and community voices, especially those with lived experience of mental health challenges. The result is a space that thoughtfully reflects the needs and preferences of its users.

The design harmonises safety and comfort by incorporating features such as natural light, soft textures, and discreet security measures. A flexible layout accommodates a broad spectrum of services, from individual consultations to group therapy, ensuring the facility remains adaptable to evolving community needs.

Through close collaboration with Wellways and regional partners, supported by robust project management practices, the team successfully delivered a facility that meets clinical requirements while fostering connection, dignity, and recovery.

Health & Wellbeing Considerations

Creating a safe environment was a central focus throughout the design and delivery of this project, with every element carefully considered to support both physical and emotional wellbeing. The facility incorporates thoughtfully selected fixtures and materials designed to minimise harm while maintaining a welcoming feel. Durable finishes and tamper-resistant design features help ensure a secure environment without compromising comfort or dignity. Clear sightlines allow for gentle, unobtrusive supervision, while still preserving privacy and autonomy.

Zoning strategies were used to separate high-activity areas from quieter, restorative spaces, reducing potential stress and sensory overwhelm. In addition, lighting, acoustics, and colour palettes were carefully chosen to create a soothing atmosphere that supports emotional regulation. These measures work together to provide a space that is not only safe, but also deeply supportive of healing and recovery.

At the core of our mission lie the needs of our clients, driving everything we do. We take pride in constructing environments that enable our clients to better serve their patients, fostering a positive impact on healthcare.
