Calibre Interiors is proud to have delivered a new, purpose-built mental health facility in Shepparton for Wellways. Designed to support recovery, inclusion, and wellbeing, the space reflects a collaborative design process shaped by input from stakeholders, clinicians, and people with lived experience of mental health challenges. The completed facility offers a warm, welcoming, and therapeutic environment, with flexible spaces tailored to a range of community support services. Calming interiors, natural light, and carefully considered spatial planning work together to promote comfort, dignity, and connection.

The Challenge

Delivering the Shepparton Mental Health Facility in partnership with Wellways came with several key challenges, including the need to sensitively integrate feedback from individuals with lived experience to ensure the design was both functional and emotionally supportive. Balancing clinical safety requirements with the goal of creating a warm, welcoming environment required innovative solutions, particularly in areas such as anti-ligature detailing and spatial zoning. Coordinating input from a wide range of stakeholders—including health professionals, support staff, and community members—was complex but vital to achieving a truly inclusive outcome.

The Solution

To address these challenges, Calibre Interiors adopted a human-centred design approach grounded in collaboration and empathy. Early and ongoing engagement with stakeholders and individuals with lived experience ensured the design genuinely reflected the needs of those who would use the space. Safety and comfort were harmonised through careful planning incorporating natural light, calming materials, and discreet safety measures to maintain a non-institutional feel. A flexible layout allows for a variety of services and interactions, supporting both individual and group-based care. By working closely with Wellways and local partners, and leveraging strong project management in a regional context, the team was able to deliver a facility that not only meets clinical standards but also fosters connection, recovery, and community support.

Safety Considerations

Safety was a central focus throughout the design and delivery of this project, with every element carefully considered to support both physical and psychological wellbeing. The design incorporates anti-ligature fittings, durable and tamper-resistant materials, and clear sightlines to enable passive supervision while maintaining privacy and dignity. Zoning strategies were used to separate high-activity areas from quiet, restorative spaces, reducing stress and potential triggers. Lighting, acoustics, and colour schemes were also selected to create a calming atmosphere that supports emotional regulation. These measures ensure the environment is not only secure, but also therapeutic. Supporting recovery in a safe, respectful, and non-institutional setting.

At the core of our mission lie the needs of our clients, driving everything we do. We take pride in constructing environments that enable our clients to better serve their patients, fostering a positive impact on healthcare.
