The Geelong Marketplace project involved transforming a heritage building into a modern medical centre, featuring 7 consultation rooms, 1 treatment room, and 2 pathology rooms. This project seamlessly blended historical preservation with contemporary healthcare needs, ensuring efficient functionality and patient care within a thoughtfully designed space.

The Challenge

Designing and constructing a medical centre within a heritage building presented several distinct challenges. The primary objective was to retrofit the clinic into the existing health hub while preserving the building’s historical charm. A key issue involved addressing the level changes within the building, requiring the installation of stairs and ramps to ensure both accessibility and compliance with modern regulations. Additionally, creating a seamless connection between the new clinic and the integrated health hub within the centre was a complex task. The fixed tenancy space also limited design flexibility, necessitating careful planning to accommodate the necessary layout and workflow.

The Solution

To meet these challenges, the design approach embraced a minimalist aesthetic that complemented the heritage building. By utilising a palette of white shades, oak timbers, and black metal accents, the design achieved a modern look that respected the building’s historical essence. Accessibility concerns were addressed through the installation of compliant ramps and stairs to manage the building’s level changes effectively. A thoughtfully planned layout ensured a seamless connection between the clinic and the health hub, enhancing the functionality of the centre. Despite the constraints of the fixed tenancy space, the design optimised the available area, preserving the building’s historical integrity while meeting the modern requirements of a medical facility.

Safety Considerations

In the Geelong Marketplace project, safety considerations were paramount, with a focus on ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. The project included meticulous planning to integrate accessible ramps and stairs, reinforcing the building’s structural integrity while preserving its historical value. Comprehensive fire safety measures, including updated alarms and sprinklers, were implemented, alongside stringent construction site safety protocols to protect workers and mitigate risks. Additionally, clear emergency access and egress routes were designed to facilitate safe evacuations, and careful handling and installation of materials were prioritised to maintain a secure working environment throughout the project.

At the core of our mission lie the needs of our clients, driving everything we do. We take pride in constructing environments that enable our clients to better serve their patients, fostering a positive impact on healthcare.
